Pub #10 The Turf, Culvert

I've popped into The Turf on Yorkshire Street a few times now, and it really is a great spot. Tonight, it's pretty quiet—it's just gone 7 p.m., which is a bit early for the big crowds—and I'm flying solo. My partner, Gemma, is away on holiday with her family, so it's a perfect night for a solitary pint.

I first arrived in Burnley around 18 months ago, and back then, this pub wasn't open. Apparently, it had been shut for a good while following a fire. I don't know the full history, but I’ve always been drawn to the name because it's an absolute nod to the local football scene: Turf Moor. The ground is literally a stone's throw away—100 yards, maybe? (I'll leave the exact measurements to the surveying lot!)

What really makes this place stand out is the amazing mural on the side of the building. It's a proper piece of artwork and definitely worth taking a moment to appreciate as you walk past.

Gemma and I were walking past one evening and noticed the lights were on—it was finally open! We called in, and the place was absolutely umping. We've been back numerous times since, and I've even managed a solo visit or two, where I’ve brought the house down with my singing when the DJ runs the karaoke! I genuinely love a good sing-song, and while I’m definitely not aiming for X-Factor (thank goodness), I’d like to think my rendition doesn't cause a mass exodus!

The Important Bit: Price Check

A blog post on a great pub isn't complete without the all-important price breakdown!

My pint of Guinness tonight set me back a very reasonable £4.80. Although Gemma wasn't with me, I made sure to check the price of her usual for our next visit: a large Pinot Grigio is a very respectable £5.00. Good to know!
