Pub#5: The Swan Inn, Town Centre

The Swan Inn, in Burnley Town Centre, holds the distinction of being widely cited as the town's oldest pub, with its history certainly tracing back to at least the early 1800s. Adding a fascinating layer to its long history is the rumour that the premises actually served as the town jail in 1819. Despite visiting for the last eighteen months, I only today spotted the original jail door still in place—a proper piece of local heritage right in the heart of the town!

At the weekend, the atmosphere livens up with a regular DJ who plays a great mixture of classic anthems and current music, catering for all tastes. There is also an upstairs room where I’ve occasionally heard the sounds of karaoke or even live musical instruments being played, which is always a bonus.

Perhaps the biggest draw for a regular visit is the incredible value for money. A pint of Guinness comes in at a remarkably cheap £4.20, and a large Pinot Grigio for Gemma was only £4.40. Given those prices, it was an easy decision to make this round on me!
